Seattle lands near the top of our list for one main reason: Max Waugh. The Northgate resident has managed to lose nearly 25 pounds in the past three months, including a purported "4-5" during the holiday season. How did he go from a "festively plump" 190+ to a svelte 168? Waugh insists he didn't do anything special. "A bit more TV, dining out more with friends who are in town for the holidays, a little relationship stress... nothing special," he says, adding that "(the weight loss) wasn't intended." We think Max sells himself a bit short. The pairing of his bold weight-loss strategy and his great city is a combination that is pure gold. A lesson can be learned from this man.

You can't get this green without getting wet, yet Seattle sees half as much rain as Miami does. The moderate climate encourages people to move about: more than 35 percent of the population walks for recreation. Max walks a reported four feet every morning from his bed to his desk. A decline in nutrition and air quality have helped. "Well, I cooked for a lot of folks around Christmas time and ate out a lot more," Max says. More scheduled visits to smoky bars and clubs in recent weeks have also been included in his regimen. A tendency to keep the boob tube plugged in has boosted this energetic man and his city. "Gotta watch them bowl games, man." Max is hampered only by an affection for non-alcoholic drinks (a whole bottle of Martinelli's on New Year's Eve) and a wretched commute downstairs for breakfast.

BRAGGING RIGHTS AND SOBERING FACTS:

  • Nielsen numbers for the Seattle-Tacoma market show that area residents spend much less time than average slumped in front of the television. Max says he "probably would've been better off not watching the Sun Bowl."
  • More than seven out of 10 Washington residents are at increased health risk because of lack of exercise - and that's one of the best scores in the nation.
  • In an American Sports Data, Inc., study of active pursuits, the greater Seattle area led the nation in the number of residents who kayak and sail. Max took a bath a couple months ago.
