Below, you'll find a copy of a letter from Magistrate Tegan Slaton of Key West, Florida. This was sent in response to a missive I wrote
contesting a parking ticket I received in November. High comedy. It also shows that it never hurts to write a letter.
Update: Due to the number of people who visit this page after searching Google for how to contest a parking ticket (or similar
key phrases), I've decided to post my original letter to the Key West parking authorities. Hopefully, it will
give you a good example of how to go about contesting an unfair ticket (politely and honestly). Please note that I wrote a similar letter in 1999 to contest a
parking ticket in San Diego, and my appeal was denied... it doesn't always work. To view my letter, click here.

Re: Parking Citation P000449400
Dear Mr. Waugh:
I write to inform you that I am reluctantly granting the relief you requested. I do so only because I agree with your assertion that most
Residential Parking spaces are not adequately noticed. There are few signs designating residential areas and the paint used to mark the
spaces fades quicker than hot breath on a cold mirror. In fact, the R.P. space in front of my house is invariably occupied by an out of
state car that isn't moved during the owner's entire stay in Key West.
While the concept of R.P. spaces was ubiquitously welcomed, enforcement has not been as vigorous as anticipated by many residents. My wife
will not be pleased by my decision.
By copy of this letter, Parking Citation P000449400 is HEREBY DISMISSED.
Sincerely,
Magistrate Tegan Slaton
