Baird's Tapir
Tapirus bairdii
Of the four tapirs we saw during the trip, this was the only one that was out in the open during the day. However, it bolted when it detected us, loping down the beach and swimming across the Sirena River, which is infested with bull sharks and crocodiles (it made it safely). The tapir sports a radio collar, part of the tapir research project being conducted in Corcovado for well over a decade.
