Beckham looked to have strained a hammy on a prett y back heel volley early on, but he stayed in the game.
United struck early, thanks to Ryan Giggs. He and Cole ran a nice 1-2, with Cole receiving the return pass
and blasting it past the Valencia keeper. 12 minutes in and United were already ahead. Unfortunately, Giggs
was subbed out soon after (injury), which effectively shut down United's left side. Oh, and after Cole's goal,
we got to sing along to the Andy Cole song! The American next to me cracked up when I told him we downloaded it
off Napster.
There weren't too many opportunities created after the Giggs sub, and Sheringham --who was pathetic-- was taken out
in the second half in favor of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Baby-faced Assassin was greeted with cries of "Ole,
Ole Ole Ole!" and the "You are my Solkjaer" song, which we sang along to heartily.
The Solskjaer song (sung to "You are my Sunshine"):
You are my Solskjaer, my Ole Solskjaer.
You make me happy when skies are gray.
Alan Shearer may be dearer,
But please don't take my Solskjaer away!
United looked to be headed toward a stalemate in the second half until Valencia broke through and bounced a shot off
the leg of a sliding Man U defender and into the goal. Final score: 1-1. BTW- the reffing was pathetic. Old Trafford
is quite a place. Sunday we'll have better seats and I'll be bringing my better camera, for sure. Ate at Pizza Hut
afterward. Much different than in the US. Wine, beer, pasta, desserts... Crazy stuff.
