I had just set up along the creek to wait for spirit and black bears to come fishing when a dark shape darted along a distant log. It was a pine marten, a very elusive target I've longed to get photos of, but never had luck with in Yellowstone (I've only seen two scampering across the road from my car).
In this case, the marten was a good 40 yards away and jumped down on the far side of the bank before disappearing into the woods. A few blurry shots were all I got. Maybe a half hour later it reappeared, this time much closer and right across the creek from me.
