Weka
Gallirallus australis
A weka and chick scour Boulder Beach for food. Usually, the adult will find it first and share with the youngster. Wekas are flightless, but can swim up to one kilometer at a time. They also seem to possess a remarkable sense of direction, if you believe the story of one weka that was taken 130k from its home and walked all the way back.
