Best of 2007: Female Mountain Gorilla

November 10: There are only 750 mountain gorillas left in the world. They don't adapt well to captivity, so the wild population found in the Congo, Uganda and Rwanda is all that's left of these creatures. Mountain gorillas share 97% of their genetic makeup with humans. Visiting with a couple of families in Rwanda, I was struck by the extent of their "humanity." They were playful, thoughtful and even unabashedly horny and flirtatious.
