November 12: Visiting Rwanda's protected mountain gorillas is a costly proposition. An hour-long visit will run you $500 per person, and visiting groups are limited to 8 people. In September alone (a slow month for tourism), Rwanda earned over $800,000 from the sale of gorilla permits. It's a big business that not only helps protect this endangered species, but funds community projects and programs.
