November 17: My main wildlife-spotting goal for the Africa trip was seeing a leopard. I had never seen a wild cat before, so viewing and photographing this medium-sized feline was something to get excited about. On our second afternoon in Tanzania's Tarangire National Park, after a dreadful morning devoid of wildlife sightings, I spied this handsome fellow resting in a tree near the road. I don't know if I was more excited about simply seeing a leopard or the fact that our eagle-eyed guide wasn't the one who spotted it. The encounter was doubly rewarding once we realized that this particular male was half of a mating couple. Since leopards only stay together about a week during the mating period, we were truly fortunate. We spent a good 45 minutes watching and shooting the pair, alone the entire time in this seemingly-abandoned region of the park. It turned out to be my highlight of the trip.
