March 29: Bison gather near Soda Butte, a dormant thermal feature found at the east end of Yellowstone's Lamar Valley. In late March and early April, most of Yellowstone is still closed to motor traffic. Only the northern road between Gardiner and Cooke City remains open year round. Despite the limited access, visitors flock to the northern range in colder months to view Yellowstone's winter wildlife, including these bison, elk and especially wolves.
