Photo of the Year - May 19: The alpha male of Yellowstone's Slough Creek wolf pack stares out across the Lamar Valley. This enounter came early one morning when 200 or so wolf watchers were gazing out into the valley in the opposite direction (watching the black speck of another wolf). I had him to myself for just a few moments before the crowd finally began to notice. Three months after this photo was taken, the wolf was struck and killed by a vehicle, ending his short reign as the Slough alpha.
