Best of 2008: Wolves at Play

September 24: The fall trip to Yellowstone was surprisingly devoid of wildlife sightings. With the exception of a couple of moose and otter encounters, photo opportunities were hard to find. I hadn't even seen a black bear the entire trip, which was odd, even in autumn. So I felt quite fortunate to spend a couple hours with wolves from the Canyon Group on my way out of the park on my final morning. The wolves had made a kill between Mammoth and Norris the day before, and I just happened to be heading that direction as I was leaving. It was difficult to find a good spot, surrounded by photographers and peering through the trees at the kill, but over the course of a couple hours the wolves came and went, providing fleeting views of activity. It was a great way to end that leg of the trip, which would only get better a day later in Utah...
