Best of 2008: Wild Puma Cub

November 29: I had been longing to return to Costa Rica ever since my first brief trip in 2005. When I finally made it back in November, I firmly planted myself in the heart of Corcovado National Park, one of the best places in the world to view wildlife. The two week trip was filled with pitfalls, including some abnormally wet weather (even for a rainforest). However, the whole experience paid off when my guide and I went out for a walk along the Naranjos Trail one afternoon. A sudden commotion from a troop of spider monkeys alerted us to the fact that a predator was nearby. We headed down the trail toward the noise and then crouched and waited to see what would emerge from the forest. We were rewarded with not just one cat, but three, as a family of pumas walked toward us through the trees. It was the first time my guide had ever seen three cats together in all his years in Corcovado.
