Best of 2008: Mule Deer Buck

September 20: I had never driven to the top of Signal Mountain in the Grand Tetons before. So I headed up and promptly fell asleep in the parking lot. After napping for a couple hours, I stole a peek at the view (very nice) and hopped back in the car to head down the mountain. Halfway down, I was fortunate to see a trio of mule deer bucks picking their way through autumn foliage. I followed the bucks for a while on foot, particularly the huge individual leading the way. He was certainly the largest mulie I'd ever seen in Yellowstone or the Tetons, but it was difficult to get pictures amidst the tree trunks and tangled branches. Patience paid off though. The mighty buck decided it was his turn for a nap, and he settled onto the forest floor. He calmly watched me snap a couple portraits, a regal subject surrounded by his forest kingdom.
