September 23: The unexpected pinnacle of the Great Bear Rainforest journey was the show put on by a couple of humpback whales one rainy afternoon. While I had hoped to photograph whales—an animal I'd never seen in the wild—I didn't expect to witness such an awesome display of playful power from these giant creatures. It lasted for 15-20 minutes, and I discovered just how hard it is to photograph a breaching whale. After all, one doesn't really know where they will come up out of the water. I was fortunate to get a couple of decent photos, including this shot, which I feel perfectly captures the incredible athleticism of these giants.
