February 6: I returned for a second winter trip to Yellowstone following our stay at the end of 2010. Friends were visiting the park for their first winter experience, which was all the excuse I needed to go back.
On Super Bowl Sunday I found myself alone in the Lamar Valley, returning to the site of my great otter coyote encounter a month earlier. I snowshoed out to the river and rounded the bend, only to find 5 otters running, playing, hunting, pooping and having some all-around fun in the snow. I spent a good hour-and-a-half with them, shooting photos and video, and had them all to myself the entire time. In this scene, one of the growing pups climbs onto an adult's back to get a better view of something further down in the valley.
Suffice to say, I missed the start of the Super Bowl...
