New Photos: South Africa 2016 Birds

My latest gallery of new images contains bird photos from South Africa.  My July/August trip was my fourth visit to South Africa.  This time, I got in a bit of scouting at new locations, and also led a nine day photo safari in Kruger National Park and MalaMala Game Reserve.  There was plenty of good bird action, particularly at the hides I scouted at Zimanga Game Reserve.

African Fish Eagle

An African fish eagle perched very close during my first session in one of the underground hides at Zimanga.

Goliath Heron

The Goliath heron is the world’s tallest heron species.

Lilac-Breasted Roller

A Lilac-breasted roller takes off.

Pearl-Spotted Owlet

Pearl spotted owlets may be the most commonly-seen African owl species during my trips.

Pied Kingfisher

The Pied kingfisher is probably the most cooperative kingfisher species I’ve ever photographed.

Scarlet-Chested Sunbird

Sunbirds are Africa’s answer to the hummingbird. They’re quite beautiful.

Red-Billed Oxpecker

Oxpeckers are a common sight on large mammals. In this case, a cape buffalo nose provides the perch.

Black-Winged Stilt

A Black-winged stilt wades in a pond at Zimanga Game Reserve. A massive Goliath heron walks behind.
