Penguin – A Story of Survival
by Stefan Christmann
The internationally awarded nature photographer Stefan Christmann spent two polar winters as close to the emperor penguins of Antarctica as no one ever before. In over 125 emotional and intimate images, he shows the deep bonds that penguins build with one another: their common fight against the cold, the loving upbringing of their chicks, always in contrast to the harsh and merciless icy desert of Antarctica. In personal narrations on over 200 pages, Christmann tells stories from the everyday life of the animals. Stories of life and survival, of birth, love and companionship at the end of the world.
The Salish Sea
Featuring the photos of Ken Archer and other photographers
Fashioned by the violent volcanism of the Pacific Rim of Fire, plate tectonics, and the sculptural magic wrought by Ice Age glaciers, the Salish Sea straddles the western border between Canada and the United States and is connected to the Pacific Ocean primarily through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This fascinating visual journey through the Salish Sea combines a scientist’s inquiring mind, beautiful photographs, and a lively narrative of fascinating stories, all of which impart a sense of connection with this intricate marine ecosystem and the life that it sustains. (Note: I reviewed this book back in 2015.)

I have the following pre-owned gear for sale. Click on the images to get a larger view and more detail.
Canon 1DX 18.1MP Camera Body
$1000 + S/H
Click on image for larger view
This is my beloved 1DX, which has produced so many amazing images for me. It shows its experience: the body’s exterior is scruffed and scratched. Nearly the entire interior was replaced by Canon in 2015 when it drowned in the Galapagos. I just had the back LCD replaced due to a large scratch. But it continues to perform marvelously. I’m convinced this body would serve me well for many years to come, but I’m slowly switching over to mirrorless.
- 1DX Camera Body (Shutter Count: ~220,000)
- 1 x LP-E4N Battery
- 1 x LP-E4 Battery
- Battery Charger (actually never used… it’s not the one in the picture)
- 3 x 32GB SanDisk CF Memory Cards
- Original Box, Manual, Strap and Cords
Canon 1D Mark IV 16.1MP Camera Body
$450 + S/H
Click on image for larger view
My first-ever professional camera body! This body has served me well during my travels, and shows general wear (small paint chips and scratches), but it in good shape otherwise. It’s been looked at by Canon Professional Services over the years. Note that this body has a 1.3x crop APS-H sensor.
- 1D Mark IV Camera Body (Shutter Count: 172,000)
- 2 x LP-E4 Batteries
- Battery Charger (not pictured)
- 2 x 16GB SanDisk CF Memory Cards
- 1 x 8GB SanDisk SD Memory Card
- Manual
Canon 40D & 20D Camera Bodies
$80 + S/H
Click on image for larger view
This collection includes a 40D body (with grip) and a 20D body, plus accessories. I have not used these bodies in maybe a decade. They would serve as a good starter kit for a young photographer, or have potential to be converted to infra-red, or perhaps used in a camera trap (the whole reason I held onto them all these years, though I ultimately never did anything along those lines). They show general wear, and because I haven’t touched them in so long, I can’t speak to their working condition… but the last time I used them they were fine!
- Canon 40D Camera Body
- Canon 20D Camera Body
- Canon BG-E2 Battery Grip (with alternate AA battery insert)
- 4 Canon BP-511A Batteries
- Canon CB-5L Charger
- 2x 8GB SanDisk CF Memory Cards
- Camera Strap
- Car Charger with Cigarette Lighter Insert
- Sorry, no manuals, but those can be downloaded online
Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 IS I Lens
SOLD
Click on image for larger view
This is the first version of Canon’s 100-400mm lens. It works great as a primary long lens for those looking for a lighter rig they can hand-hold, or as a secondary zoom lens for those who have a long fixed lens. This lens has served me well over the years on my wildlife adventures.
The lens shows wear (scattered paint chips), but works just fine. A reminder that this is the older model that does not autofocus well with a teleconverter attached. Comes with lens hood and caps, as well as a soft case (not pictured).
Venus Optics Iaowa 60mm 2:1 2.8 Super Macro Lens
SOLD
Click on image for larger view
I purchased this lens based on the recommendation of Thomas Shahan, one of the great bug macro photographers in my field. However, I found it incredibly challenging to use in the field. It’s a very sharp lens, but it’s fully manual (meaning the camera won’t dial in the exposure or focus for you). So it takes some practice. I used it on only one trip and then a bit of practice, so consider this to be in “excellent” condition.
Canon G10 14.7MP Camera + U/W Housing
SOLD
Click on image for larger view
The G10 was one of Canon’s earlier heavy duty point and shoot digital cameras that produced high quality images. It got a decent megapixel count and shoots RAW in addition to Jpeg. With the housing included, this could be a nice kit for snorkeling trips.
- Canon G10 Camera
- 2 Canon NB-7L Batteries + Charger
- 2GB SanDisk SD Memory Card
- G10 Manual
- Carrying Case with Strap
- Canon Underwater Housing for G10 (with Flash Diffuser)

24/7 Traffic Collection Features:
- Padded Top Handle Tote insert
- Adjustable shoulder/body strap

Flashpoint Rotating Camera Flip-Flash Bracket
SOLD
Click on image for larger view
“The Flashpoint Rotating Camera Flip Flash Bracket (FPX-BK-FL05) allows you to smoothly rotate almost any SLR camera 90°, even those with add-on power grips, for vertical or horizontal shots, while keeping the flash stationary above the camera, maintaining the look of your lighting. This bracket dramatically improves the quality of your light by positioning your flash farther from your lens while staying directly above it, on-axis, no matter the camera orientation.”

TriggerTrap Remote Camera Trap
SOLD
Click on image for larger view
The TriggerTrap is a remote camera trap device that gained some traction as a KickStarter several years back. It is capable of triggering a camera based on motion, light, and even sound. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell you how to do any of that, as it’s never come out of the box… and the company went under a few years ago.
This item may or may not be easy to use. It’s ideal for a current TriggerTrap user, but if it’s new to you, it could be a fun experiment to play with, or you may be able to track down some reading materials to help you figure it out.
This item has never been used.
