New Photos: Yellowstone 2024

Having recently completed a string of photo tours in quick succession, it’s time for me to tackle the backlog of photos. First up: shots from two trips to Yellowstone.

I had to cut my traditional spring Yellowstone visit a bit short due to the addition of another last-minute trip, so I only got a few days on my own in late May before my Spring Wildlife Tour kicked off in the first week of June (if you missed the trip reports, they start here). On the plus side, I was able to return to the park in early July for a friends/family trip. Of course I brought the camera, and managed to luck into a few nice wildlife encounters during the peak summer period.

Anyway, this gallery is fairly small. The spring tour was a success, but photo ops were often wanting. Good sightings didn’t always translate to photographable moments. This gallery contains the unquestioned highlights from both trips. As always, you can jump straight to the archive to see all the photos. A short preview follows.

I arrived in time to see action at this coyote den before the mother moved the pups later in the afternoon.

This grizzly bear family had caught and killed an elk calf before I arrived on the scene. The distraught cow elk stayed in the area.

This Dusky Grouse was showing off atop Yellowstone Lake one morning.

I normally find more moments to photograph this icon during winter trips, but enjoyed my bison encounters nonetheless.

We were fortunate to spend a little time with a couple of black bear families during my spring tour.

We had some great views of this pair of colts (what you call a Sandhill Crane chick) during my tour.

I often visit the rock piles at the Hellroaring trailhead in hopes of seeing weasels or martens, which hunt pikas there. It almost never pans out, but during this year’s tour we scored with this handsome male long-tailed weasel!
