I recently added 2007 Yellowstone photos to the archive, providing a permanent home for many of some of my all-time favorites from the park. Now I’ve built on that momentum by adding another collection from “the good ol’ days,” featuring my 2008 photos. This collection spans three trips: spring, fall, and my first-ever winter trips. It includes several personal milestones, including my first fox den and my first small black bear cubs.
These images were combined with the 2007 shots in one gallery for the archive. You can jump to it to view them all, or check out the short preview below.
This was my first time photographing small black bear cubs. It was the famed bear of the Tower area, nicknamed Rosie, and her brood of mixed cubs. Unfortunately, Rosie was an old bear at this point (estimated to be 18 years), and neither she nor the cubs survived beyond spring.
I don’t think I really appreciated how photogenic bison are back in those days.
Coyotes are so common in the park they are often unappreciated, but I find they provide many interesting photo moments.
Members of Yellowstone’s Druid Peak Pack crest a snowy hillside in the Lamar Valley. This was my first ever winter trip to the park, and one of the few photos I have of Druid wolves in the archive.
This female grizzly was a common sight up near Dunraven Pass back in the day.
The moon rises over the Absaroka Mountains north of Yellowstone.
The Canyon Group (they had not yet formed a proper pack by then) made a kill west of Canyon Junction. I was fortunate to see them in the wee hours one morning, and thanks to modern day photo processing, a few of the photos were salvageable. This wolf was later named 712M after being collared by the Yellowstone Wolf Project.
This bull moose was marching past sunrise in the Grand Tetons one morning. Due to the old camera equipment and dark conditions, this image definitely suffered from a bit of noise and softness, but the resulting image definitely has a painterly feel. Print buyers should keep that in mind!
On a very memorable morning in September, I was on my way out of the park (heading to Utah, where I’d photograph my first ever mountain lion the next day), when I joined a throng of photographers to photograph the Canyon Pack on a kill. There were scant sight lines through the dense trees, but a few photos came out.
