NPPNW Seminars: November 6 & 7, 2026

I’m excited to announce that I will be giving two seminars this November in Portland, Oregon, for the Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest!Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest!

I’ve been invited to speak at their semi-annual conference, which will take place at Portland State University. On Friday, November 6, attendees will get a chance to participate in photography field trips, and then attend a social hour in the evening with yours truly. Saturday, November 7 is the big day. I’ll be giving two talks, and there will be a lot of other highlights, including photo competitions, raffled prizes, sensor cleaning, and drinks provided.

NPPNW Fall 2026 Conference

My themes for these presentations differ:

A Journey of Discovery: Sparking Creative Energy in Your Photography

This is a biographical journey of my photography career, which focuses on my evolution from a strictly “tooth and claw” photographer, to someone who developed an appreciation for birds (quite by accident), and then started to overcome fear and self-doubt to become fascinated by macro subjects. Learn from this tale of mistakes, laziness, and happy accidents that somehow helped one photographer derive more enjoyment from his adventures in the field and from the craft.

Thinking Inside the Box: Creating Drama in an Image with Relationships

This is the more “technical” seminar, though in reality it’s more about art than numbers. For years I’ve declared that there’s “one main thing” photographers can do to improve their photos, and it’s all about what’s presented in frame. I’ll take a deep dive into what make us succeed and fail during and after taking the photo, due to the decisions we make with composition and cropping.

I hope to see you in Portland in November!
