Alaska Brown Bears Photo Tour
June 20 – 27, 2025: $8850pp
August 2026: Price TBD
Come face to face with the brown bears of coastal Alaska on this summer tour in one of the world’s best spots for close-up bear photography!
We are putting together two DIFFERENT experiences for 2025 and 2026. Read on to make sure you’re choosing the tour that’s right for you.
Join Max in Lake Clark National Park (in a private lodge) as we search for Alaska Peninsula brown bears as they enjoy summer’s bounty and begin to fatten up for winter. Depending on which trip you join, we’ll watch and photograph bears as they emerge for the early summer feast on a variety of foods, which may include clams, salmon, or coastal grasses and other vegetation. This is one of the world’s best spots for close, safe bear viewing on foot, as the bears are concentrating on their abundant food supply in preparation for winter. Participants on this trip do not need a mega lens to get close shots of these spectacular creatures.
Bears are the main focus of these trips, which are based at lodges exclusively booked for our group. However, we’ll be on the lookout for other wildlife as well. Other possibly subjects include red fox, the elusive gray wolf, Bald eagles and other bird life. Our stay also includes a marine excursion to look for sea otters, puffins, and other marine life.
2025 (June 20 – 27):
This early summer trip takes us to a remote lodge for a nearly-exclusive bear experience! We’ll be based away from the more popular beach areas with bears that are just emerging from hibernation and beginning to feast on coastal sedge grasses (and sometimes barnacles along the rocky shores). If we are fortunate to see spring cubs, they’ll still be rather tiny at this stage. We’ll also have access to a nearby island to photograph the charismatic Horned and Tufted Puffins that roost there (weather permitting). This is the trip you want if you’re seeking a truly private experience.
June 20: Fly into Homer/Kenai (TBD), overnight in local hotel
June 21: Fly out to our private lodge in Lake Clark National Park
June 22 – 26: Photography with bears and other wildlife.
June 27: Depart for Homer/Kenai and back to Anchorage for flights home.
2026 (August, exact dates TBD):
This late summer trip will take us back to the more popular spot in Lake Clark which is known for producing wonderful photo opportunities with some of the park’s more famous bears. This has been our home base during my past trips, which were a great success. We’re timing this trip for August in hopes of catching the salmon run, and perhaps a colorful sunrise or two. Sightings are more likely to be shared with guests from the neighboring lodge and with day visitors, but bear action should be more varied. We’ll also visit the local island for puffin action, if the birds are still in the area (weather permitting).
