Costa Rica Photo Tour: Quetzals to Corcovado

Join me on an exciting Costa Rica wildlife adventure! This popular tour takes us to some of the best places for wildlife photography in the entire country. We’ll seek out the resplendent quetzal and other birds in the highlands, colorful frogs, birds and mammals on the central Caribbean slope, and more mammals, owls, aquatic birds and large crocodiles on the Pacific coast. For the truly adventurous, the optional extension takes us to Corcovado National Park, the best place for wildlife in the entire country. This rustic Corcovado experience is truly unique among Costa Rica photo tours!

Here’s the 2028 itinerary:

March 25: Arrive in San Jose, Costa Rica
March 26 – 27: Los Angeles Cloud Forest (Resplendent Quetzal, birds, mammals, herps, night walks and macro)
March 27 – 29: Sarapiqui (Birds, mammals, herps, night walks and macro)
March 30 – 31: Central Pacific Region (Carara National Park, Tarcoles River cruise… mammals, birds—owls???)
April 1: Return to San Jose OR depart for Corcovado Extension
April 2: Folks who don’t participate in the extension fly home

Optional Corcovado Extension:

April 1: Arrive Corcovado NP, Sirena Station… afternoon exploration
April 2 – 3: Sirena Station
April 4: Morning exploration, depart for San Jose
April 5: Flights home

What to Expect on this Tour:

This Costa Rica adventure mixes the best elements of the tropical rainforest experience, while eschewing some of the “common practices” found on many photo tours to this country. We don’t park ourselves in front of bird feeders for hours on end, instead opting to walk jungle trails and even country roads in search of wildlife and birds not enticed by feeders. For macro work we don’t work with captive animals or “wrangle” frogs and other subjects, opting instead to minimize disturbance by photographing them in situ.

You’ll experience walks during both day and night, both on and off trail, while still enjoying some of the comforts of a nice lodge, villa or hotel as your home base throughout the trip. Oh, and there’s even a river cruise! We’ll do plenty of bird photography, seek unusual creatures during the night, and will be on the lookout for some of Costa Rica’s most popular forest mammals.

The optional Corcovado extension is a departure from the usual fare, and this is one of very few tours that offers a multi-day stay at Sirena Research station in the heart of the park. This experience is more rugged compared to the rest of the trip. It’s a communal sleeping and eating area (bunk beds under mosquito nets, basic food), but the reward comes from the fact that we have numerous trails accessing the best wildlife area in the country. National Geographic called Corcovado “the most biologically intense place on earth.”
